If you are on John Reese’s list, I’m betting you know a lot more about Facebook this week than you did before. John got it in his head that he should pay more attention to Facebook recently and I just have to report some wild things that have been happening that I don’t think even John knows about.
John is building his Facebook friends list right now. Not one or two at a time, but hundreds and hundreds at a time. Last I saw he was at 2122 friends and counting. John was one of the relative few who noticed Facebook only allows 5000 friends.
That question wouldn’t come up for most people since the average Facebook friend list is most likely far from 5000 members. Kind of a non-issue for most users.
Anyway, I am on John’s friend list and, as it started growing because of his mentioning it this week to his list, I began to notice MY friend requests going up. A lot. Last week I probably got a few friend requests. This week they are pouring in.
Why is that?
Since the only thing that has changed this week is John mailing a couple times about his Facebook profile, I have to assume it is because people are pouring through HIS list and adding people they know from it.
Apparently the IM world is now fully Facebooked or headed that way.
Focusing a lot of people in on one social media site brings about some wild effects. John isn’t just showing more people what can be done with social media, but the growth of his network is affecting many other people like me. Just from a couple of emails.
I never really pushed my Facebook account that much. I play on the newer, edgier social marketing scene. Facebook and Mayspace are like AOL to me and other hardcore social marketers.
Yet, since John has had me more focused on Facebook, I’ve been playing with it more and am finding neat social marketing tactics I didn’t know had been developed into the app since it came out. My social media snobbiness bites me in the ass sometimes.
The notes and posts sections are really cool. That’s where you can drop links from anywhere on the net. (i.e. all your sites and other blogs, twitters, HubPages, etc.)
But since I was blowing Facebook off as a light-duty social site (which is was for a long time), I hadn’t noticed those and other features that make it a worthwhile place to put down some roots for marketers.
So thanks John! Shining your light on Facebook is going to help a lot of marketers get more traffic, even if they don’t yet know why or how.
By the way, if you want to be John’s friend you’d better hurry. He will certainly hit the 5000 friend mark and after that, you’re out of the loop.
You’ll probably always have me to poke though. I can’t imagine approving 5000 friend requests manually!

John Reese is up to something with Facebook - I am interested to see what develops. John often thinks of something nobody else has done quite like him. Good lesson for marketers. Too many times someone does something, sells how they did it, then so many people try it the idea is much less effective and sometimes becomes useless.

Thanks for speaking up about Facebook, Jack. I just recently joined and have begun to add friends. I’ve noticed that people are requesting that I include them as a friend and my network is beginning to grow. I like their interface but still have a lot to learn about Facebook. I took your suggestion and joined requested to be a friend of John’s before the window closes. Have a great one!

Thanks for the heads up Jack. I too just opened a Facebook account and need to add a pix!
I’ve also sent a request to you ! Looking forward to learning more from you re the “newer, edgier social marketing scene!”
Hey Jack,
Mmm, I got caught up in the phenomenon called John Reese too. I’m really liking the Facebook experience. And, it’s good to catch up with old friends.

Hi Jack,
We’ll be looking forward to your further posts explaining to us the significance of using Facebook. Right now, I have little time to check it out. Too many other undone chores left to attend to.
Ah, it must be nice to have the time to fool around with Facebook.

As you, Jack, I’ve always looked at FaceBook as the new MySpace. Just another “add friends” machine. But I broke down and created an account last week. I noticed that my clients competitor’s profiles were ranking really well… sometimes you gotta swallow your pride.
I feel ya Jack…
I’m just now drinking the Facebook Kool-Aid.
There are some interesting apps and interfaces, especially the ability to create a business profile page.
Hummm… a Business Profile Page for each of your products or affiliate promos?
Gotta explore the possibilities.

It seems everyone is screaming and yelling about FaceBook these days. Not something I have mastered by any means. But it does have some neat features showing who is doing what. Who is becoming friends of who.
You can actually see movements of groups of people if you look. I think it can be a great way to watch what’s hot in your particluar niche.
Hey Jack,
We are on each others Facebook profile and i too am on John’s. One thing I noticed is that a lot on John’s lest have decided to make friends with each other. A massive IM social network.
Do you think this will have any effect on Forums such as warrior given all are now in the same place and can communicate openly instead of behind the safety of their PC?

I’m not big on getting on these websites just to create massive “friends lists.” It seems more of an ego thing than anything else. “Look at me! I have 5,000 friends!” No you don’t.
I prefer to create lists one-on-one. I’d have rather have a list of 100 rabid customers - and friends - than 10,000 people who just delete every email or “notice of posting” or whatever it’s called.
I think it is better to focus on building long-term relationships rather than just building big lists.
I routinely spend 1 day a month to “unsubscribe” from lists I never should have joined and aren’t doing me any good. The ones I stay on are the ones that seek to develop relationships - and not just by giving away free stuff. THOSE are the ones I get off the fastest, because I know a pitch is just waiting around the corner.
Thanks Jack!

P.S. I’ve been to Richmond IN several times. Great town. Great hometown cafes and restaurants.
Well, I can honestly say that John Reese and his big mouth took a day or two out of my time…but Facebook should be an interesting experiment. Does it get you on a first name basis with the big guys…or is it, more importantly, connecting you with some really interesting small guys?
I chanced upon a BETA tester for some cool software that’s about to be released…plus smaller but influential “gurus” like Rick Butts and Gary Knuckles who are a wealth of knowledge…and have great contacts.
Lastly, I’ve been gathering female internet marketers (no, I’m not a sleaze) members who may be willing to review my soon-to-be released book & pop soundtrack (see my link for the internet marketing side of the story) if I approach them in the right way.
So, will Facebook work? Maybe, just maybe!

With so many things to distract you, having a good reason to “do” something is useful.
Mine is to see what John (and Jack) are up to on Facebook… to see what else I can learn from you guys. And it’s like a “who’s who” of internet marketers there at the moment, so lots to learn from other people too!
Now I just have to make sure I don’t waste too much time fiddling over there…
Cheers

Thanks for the nudge, Jack. I was lucky to get on John’s list early because I’ve been a subscriber ever since I’ve been on the internet. I’ve been on Facebook since last August but I haven’t done much with it, other than meet some nice people. (Not such a terrible thing!)
If you say it’s gonna be important, and John says it’s gonna be important, then I better get busy studying how to Facebook correctly!
Have a great weekend!

I think only time will tell. Getting thousands of Warriors, some dating back to the beginning, to adopt Facebook or some other place SEEMS impossible. But then there are a lot of them on John’s friend list now, so who knows?
Allen Says didn’t get on Facebook for nothing.
“I’m not big on getting on these websites just to create massive “friends lists.” It seems more of an ego thing than anything else. “Look at me! I have 5,000 friends!” No you don’t.”
I think all levels of friends have a purpose. See my recent review of a post on The 5 Levels of Social Media Relationships to see what I mean.
I think everyone is excited and many don’t know what’s going on and they are making mistakes. Others are outright spamming to take advantage of the riot. It all shakes out in the end though with social marketing. Not so true in areas like search engine marketing.
Hey - I see in the comment above that I am a smaller time “guru” (quotes in the original) - I like that!
I’m having the exact experience you mentioned Jack - although I was using Facebook a bit more than you already - I am getting some “Reese Juice” since I am apparently a “smaller known” guru of some medium importance! LOL
The important thing for me - is that some very attractive girls are apparently fooled by my ultru cute profile photograph (actual photo) and the dating requests are pouring in.
Now that’s the kind of 1000 True Fans I like!

My point exactly. Now we are all in the same place may have some impact on thses big forums….
…With this in mind, I am still here writing on your site simple because it’s about web 2.0. Maybe targeted niche sites will become even more important
Anyway, I’m still refering people to you who express an interest in web 2.0 so keep up the great content.
