Higher Rankings Through Good Neighbors

April 15, 2007

Anyone who has a 101 level of understanding SEO knows that ye be judged by the company ye keep!

Meaning, your “link neighborhood” and your rankings in Google are directly tied.

This is the cause of the phenomenon where you go to Google, find your competitors in the top 10 for your best keywords, and then find that one or more of them are beating the snot out of you, yet have far less incoming links than you.

Hey man, not cool.

Actually, it IS cool once you figure out what’s going on and fix it.

You may have tons of incoming links. Some of them suck. Some of them need to be made up for by getting the best links you can get from your neighbors who have more to give you.

If you get links from your neighbors who live in the trailer park down the street, you are going to get results that will end up forcing you to move into a double-wide yourself someday.

But, if you attract links from the “Rothchilds” up the street from you, you’ll “be movin’ on up to the eastside” in no time flat.

If you have a site on dog training you need to be linked by the top sites in dog training relevant information, products or services.

Good luck finding out which sites in your niche Google thinks thinks that highly of. (Hint: it isn’t as easy as looking at the top 10 for some random or even the best keyword in your niche!)

Checking on your neighborhood was a hit or miss proposition for a long time until tools came out which analyze and report back all the juicy link partners a group of sites have in common.

Kind of like a neighborhood watch program. A “keep out the hooligans and protect each other from the unwashed masses” kind of thing.

So…

…want to be more like the #1 site in your niche? Find out way more about them by using the common backlinks tool from “We Build Pages” than doing the amateur link:website move that all the newbies use.

Don’t freak out. The tool is free. And if you stare at it long enough there is a slight feeling of elation coming your way once you see what the tool is doing.

Yep, I’m giving away elation today.

That’s how I roll…

Tutorials Galore at Tutorialized

April 11, 2007

Everyone likes a good tutorial.

Especially when it hits your most burning question, issue, or problem right on the nose.

Free how-to information isn’t hard to come by these days, but quality how-to tutorials are.  That’s why I like what I see at Tutorialized.com.

If you publish tutorials, it gets even better.  You can submit your tutorials on subjects ranging from Photoshop to marketing to Frontpage and many more categories.

Great for getting some more exposure for work you’ve already done and possibly reaching a new audience you’ve yet to get in front of.  The site has a PR 6 and looks like lots of traffic.

They need your content, you need their traffic.  (And you might need a tutorial from there once in awhile yourself!)

Everyone wins!

Link Love and Sissies

December 18, 2006

I found a great post on “How To Build A Better Blog” today that helps marketers understand the reason for linking to other sites, even your competition.

Totally backwards from what we marketers from the mid to late 90’s learned about linking to or even mentioning competition on our sales pages.

But therein lies the difference.  All we had back then were sales pages.  No content.  No free information.  Nothing but pitch.

Nowadays it is quite a different story.  Web 2.0 demands we flip everything we know about linking upside down and do the exact opposite of what we learned starting out.

The most profound lesson in all of this, from Build a Better Blog’s post title, is “Link Love Is Not For Sissies.”

How true.  To this day it is weird for me to link to competitors or people I overlap with considerably.  But I do willingly and with 99% glee because it brings 37% of my first time visitors back to my site according to my stats.
You will find out here why it works, despite the counter intuitive-ness of linking to anything that doesn’t put money directly into your account!

Man, How Stupid Were People About Links?

October 25, 2006

Take a step back in time to 2000 with this Wired article about newspapers trying to charge websites for linking to them!

Yes, you read that correctly. Back in the day it seems the e-neanderthals were trying to charge people for sending them readers.

Newspapers have had such a hard time with the internet. I still don’t know how they stay afloat when news is free, better, and easier to access on the web now more than ever.

Poor guys. Charging for the “privilege” of linking to them must have been when they first saw the writing on the wall: papers were going to die someday, better get some cash fast!

I had a guy threaten to sue me once for linking to his lousy site. Well after 2000. It was like running into a caveman at a Mensa meeting!

Hard to believe how far we’ve come. (Most of us anyway)

Once Upon A Link

October 25, 2006

Once upon a time a website owner looked for and secured [tag]links[/tag] from other sites simply to get traffic from that site and send some traffic back for the privilege.

There was no Google, Yahoo, or MSN setting rules about [tag]reciprocal links[/tag] which have now somehow become “the law.”

Links are for traffic… targeted traffic.

Since, to this day, nothing does your site more good than a good, visible, relevant link from a site which caters to your perfect market base, I propose a test you can run in your marketing for a couple of months.

Get links from sites based upon factors that matter most:

1. Good content
2. Strong reader base
3. Willingness to link from a prominent place

Blog Marketing Tips

October 23, 2006

It’s about time you showed up here. I’ve been waiting!

So you want to know about [tag]blog marketing[/tag]? Got a sudden urge for more links, better search engine results, and more traffic?

Here are a couple sure-fire tips to keep you up past bedtime tonight…

Say Important Stuff!

Blogging is all about being interesting, informative, maybe controversial, helpful, and concise.

If you are trying to blog in order to get more prospects clicking on ads, buying recommended products, or buying your own product or service, you simply must spend time creating content that satisfies.

Most marketers-turned-bloggers have a terrible obsession with bland content and in-your-face marketing tactics that simply do not work in the [tag]blogosphere[/tag].

To garner rabid readers you have to care about them. Sincerely. Not Fakely(Don’t run to your dictionary, I just invented that word.)
Give them good, topical, helpful things to read and let them decide if they want to click an ad or buy something in your sidebar.

People trust you faster if you don’t have your hand on their wallets the very second they land on your blog!

Link Baiting

If you were in my niche and you put up a helpful post about internet marketing tactics, blog promotion tips, or something on effective list building, I would likely want to link to your post to save myself some writing and to look good to my readers for providing a great resource.

As you can see in my other posts, I do this a lot. My readers want me to filter the mass of information out there and present them with tips and resources that matter to them so they don’t have to be up at 4 a.m. like I am now.

People link to my stuff and I link to them. Far from the old days where we hid links from our visitors, we now openly link to each other and take part in a larger discussion, knowing we will get traffic back for our efforts.

Good Link Bait

Lists rock. Do the work of researching a good list of sites, recommendations, posts on a certain topic, recipes, resources, or anything else that your readers will appreciate and there’s a chance other bloggers will link to your resource too.

Just so’s they can look like heros to their readers without having to work.

Here is a sample of one of my most successful link bait pages.

People love that list. People just love lists. Don’t you?

Kill Them With Content

Don’t over do it, but write often. Many of the top bloggers write 3-5+ times per day, and that’s ok.

You got something to say on a few topics today? Say it!

Just never let too much time go by where you don’t get something new on your site.

With blogging, especially on a system like I am using, every post is a new entry into the engines for new keywords and phrases.

And every post is possible [tag]link bait[/tag].

Those should keep you busy for awhile. I post these things all the time, so make sure you are subscribed to the Friday Traffic Report Ezine for reminders and special email-only articles and how-to’s. Subscribe above - big yellow box on right - can’t miss it!

Linkbaiting. How Hard Is It?

September 8, 2006

Editor’s Note:Linkbaiting is a major authority site tactic. Good content begets lots of voluntary links from other sites looking to impress their visitors with relevant, cool places to visit.Find out how [TAG]linkbaiting[/TAG] is done below…

Linkbaiting is a big topic for discussion lately. Everyone wants and needs links. We can ask for links, buy links or create articles and submit them for one way links. Linkbaiting is about getting links without doing any of these. Linkbaiting is essentially baiting people in by creating something they want to link to. So, what could we use to bait people into linking to you?

Podcasting: Creating a podcast that discusses news, tips or information on your industry is great baiting tool. Making your podcast unique and consistent is the key to steady stream of new links.

Interviews: These are great. If you could interview someone well known in your industry, that would certainly be worth linking to. For an added boost, do the interview on your podcast and then transcribe it.

Awards: Awards are another way to bring in traffic, though you can’t (or at least shouldn’t) simply make up an award. It has to have criteria, high standards and most importantly, meaning. If you give awards to everyone who applies, your award will seem insignificant and unimportant. The upside is you can gain a lot of traffic and one way links from award winners.

Tools and games: These will always be popular. Create a new tool for your industry that is legitimately helpful or develop a game related to your industry that is either informative or amusing. Firefox or wordpress plugins will bring steady traffic for a long time.

Content: Content is the easiest of all to create. Articles and blog posts are a great way to go about linkbaiting. You need to use your imagination to make your post compelling. Keeping on top of news and current affairs will help you pick a topic that people are already interested in. There is nothing wrong with piggy backing on some top stories if it relates to what you do.
Video: The is becoming one of the fastest forms of link baiting, in my opinion. Creating a funny or informative video can create quiet a buzz.

Giveaways and contests: These are great for a quick boost in traffic. However, these are also short lived. Giveaways need to have an associated monetary value. Contests, unless they are monthly, will die along with the links after the contest is over.

Blogs and forums: These are usually overlooked as a form of linking baiting, but they are one of the earliest forms of link baiting. Nothing says “link to me” more than a forum or a blog. Proving they have something of interest for the readers.

Guest appearances: This is one I like to use. I like to exchange writings, interviews or ideas with other bloggers and podcasters. Let me post a post on your blog and you can post on mine for a cross promotion. It’s a great way to get a link as well. If you have a podcast, exchange advertisements with other casts along with a link on your podcast page.

Lists: List are very popular. Why? Well, because they are a list of something of value that people want, all in one place. I have a list of over 200 article submission sites to submit articles to, directories that you can submit your podcast to for free and free directories to get your site listed on. These are always my most often viewed posts.

Where to set your bait: Press releases and social networks are the best places to cast your line. Make an enticing headline and real in some hefty traffic.

If you try once a week to do some form of linkbaiting, by at least writing a topical post or putting together a lengthy list that readers will find useful, you will see a steady increase of traffic and hopefully links.

Untapped Linking Tactics by Kim Roach

September 3, 2006

Links are the pathways by which all information on the Internet is connected. Whether you are traveling your preferred search engine or your favorite website, your paths are directed by the links you come in contact with.
Because of this, links have become the lifeblood of the Internet. Major search engines like Google evaluate your incoming links to help determine your search engine positions.

However, a link is much more than just a ranking factor. A quality inbound link can bring your website a steady stream of targeted traffic and buyers.

In this article I will reveal the untapped methods of obtaining quality inbound links. We all know that reciprocal links are dead. Smart internet marketers also know about the power of article marketing and rss syndication. This article looks to explore beyond those techniques, unveiling linking tactics that are largely undiscovered.

Read on to find out about which links you can gain to build buzz, how to leverage the power of wikis, why everyone needs an affiliate program, and how to use the web 2.0 craze to garner hundreds of high quality inbound links.

We will begin our journey with editorial link opportunities.

The right links can generate massive buzz and word of mouth marketing. This type of marketing can occur from links like Yahoo Picks, Forbes Best of the Web, and USA Today Hot Sites. Get listed on the following sites and you’ve certainly got a winner.

Yahoo Picks of the Day/Week
Forbes Best of the Web
USA Today Web Guide/Hot Sites
NY Public Library Best of the Web
Exploratorium Ten Cool Sites
Librarians Internet Index
Reference Desk

Wikis

Wikis are some of the best sources for link building. With a bit of digging, you can find plenty of wiki pages with high link popularity and PageRank. Not to mention, many wikis rank well in the search engines. This is especially true for Wikipedia.

However, like everything, there is a wrong and right way to go about it. Many people try to spam wikis with hundreds of links. Because of this, there have been strict measures taken to find and eliminate these culprits.

To benefit from the Wiki community, you must be an active participant adding quality and relevant information to their collection of content. You must add value to a page. Once you have done this, you can then incorporate your link if it’s a good fit.

However, don’t just add information to pages that present linking opportunities. You should also be contributing to the wiki just for the sake of adding great content to the database. When appropriate, add quality links to articles, even links you do not control. Using this strategy, it is much more likely that you will be able to benefit from the many wikis available online.

To find potential linking opportunities, simply go to Google and type in %22your keywords%22 inurl:wiki. This will help you to find sites that have wikis related to your keywords. For example, if you are looking for wikis related to search engine marketing, you would type in %22search engine marketing%22 inurl:wiki.

For a comprehensive list of wikis you can start contributing to , go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wikis.

Library Sites

Ok. Are you ready for the MacDaddy of all links? You may be surprised to hear that some of the best links on the Web can only be obtained from public shool library Web sites. Yes I know, it’s hard to believe that an unattractive school website that lives out in the .us or .org jungle would be of value to you. But in fact, these are some of the most trustworthy links you could ever hope to obtain.

Library web sites are some of the most trusted sources on the Internet and Google knows it. So, if you have an extremely valuable site that would prove a valuable resource to people around the world, then you should certainly get in contact with a librarian to suggest your site as an addition to their list of resources.

Below is a list of library sites to get you started:

Virginia Pubic Library Websites
Ohio Public Library Web Sites

Affiliate Links

Affiliate programs are one of the best ways to obtain thousands of inbound links to your site. With the right software, you can use an affiliate program to super charge your search engine rankings.

Using an affiliate program, you can get hundreds and even thousands of other people to promote your products with no risk on your part. Your affiliates send visitors to your web site using banner ads, text links, articles, and email promotions. For every visitor who decides to buy, you pay your affiliate a percentage of the sale.

The beauty of this system is that it allows you to create extra revenue without spending any additional advertising dollars. You can use affiliate marketing to explode your online sales and catapult your search engine rankings with no risk to you.

However, you have to make sure you have the right software to do this. Some affilate tracking software doesn’t lend any link popularity back to your site.

Go to Assoctrac.com to find out about some very powerful affiliate software.

Press Releases

As I wrote about in a previous article, press releases enable you to tap into multiple news sites across the Internet, including Google News, Yahoo News, and MSNBC Searchbot.

In addition to attracting thousands of targeted visitors to your site, press releases can also create thousands of quality inbound links.

However, to realize the full potential of your press release campaign, you must take time to optimize your press release properly. Press releases should be optimized in much the same way that search engine optimization specialists optimize ordinary web pages to achieve higher rankings. By optimizing your press releases for the search engines, you will receive much higher visibility.

For example, one press release from MarketingExperiments.com resulted in 2,200 visitors and 5 interview requests by journalists. This is the power of a highly optimized press release.

Some of the best places to distribute your press release online include:

prweb.com
internet.com
businesswire.com
prnewswire.com
bacons.com
e-releases.com
prfree.com
pr.com
webwire.com
marketwire.com
24-7pressrelease.com
pressreleasenetwork.com
i-newswire.com

Start your own press campaign to begin creating invaluable buzz, attracting targeted visitors, and gaining thousands of inbound links.

Social Search Engines

With the growth of Web 2.0, social bookmarking services have become extremely popular this past year. However, these search engines are much more than simply a tool for searching and saving your favorite websites. These social communities can also drive massive amounts of traffic to your site and build brand awareness.

Popular submissions can expect to receive an onslaught of traffic. In addition, popular sites also receive an abundance of link love. These social search engines influence bloggers, publishers and journalists. On average, a website that is Dugg receives an average of 500 to a thousand new inbound links within a short period of time.

If you have a very informative site, your traffic may increase permanently after being Dugg. The key to succeeding with social search engines is to be a true contributor to the community. You must have quality content if you want to submit any of your links. Otherwise, you are simply wasting your time.

In addition, don’t just submit your own links. Share the love and submit other sites that you feel would provide a great resource to the community.

Some of the best online social communities include:

Digg
del.icio.us
Furl
Shadows.com
MyWeb
StumbleUpon
PreFound
Technorati

In today’s generation of web 2.0, publishers have been given multiple outlets for their work. It’s time that we start taking advantage of the changes occurring in the online publishing world.

Podcast Syndication

Another publishing opportunity that is undergoing rapid growth online is podcasting. The Internet is changing. Broadband Internet connection is allowing millions of Internet users to start downloading podcasts on every imaginable topic, from search engine strategies to the adventures of parenting.

According to Forrester Research, podcasting will reach 12.3 million households by 2010. Unfortunately, many webmasters are not taking advantage of this amazing opportunity.

To begin marketing your own podcasts, submit them to the following directories:

PodcastingNews.com
MasterNewMedia.org

Integrating these new distribution models can vastly increase your exposure online.

New Forms of Article Syndication

Article syndication has become quite popular among internet marketers. It has enabled writers and website owners to gain hundreds of quality inbound links simply by syndicating their articles to article directories, article groups, related websites, and newsletter publications.

However, web 2.0 has transformed the publishing platforms that are available today. Because of this, there are now many more outlets for your articles and your valuable resource box. Fortunately for you, many online marketers have not spotted these opportunities so I advise you to jump on them quickly.

One of the most exciting new publishing platforms is Squidoo.

Squidoo was created by a revolutionary online thinker named Seth Godin. At Squidoo, you can create your very own lens, which is simply your view on a particular topic. This is a single web page that can point to blogs, favorite links, RSS feeds, Flickr photos, Google maps, eBay auctions, Amazon books and other resources.

Best of all, these lenses are getting traffic, credibility, and even showing up in top Google results. You can use a lens to increase the number of authoritative inbound links to your site, position yourself as an industry expert, announce the latest news within your niche, or promote your podcasts.

I’ve seen lenses ranging from a pagerank of 3 to 5. Below are some great examples:

FxBootcamp : PR4

Cool Laptop Bags : PR5

To start your own lens, go to Squidoo.com.

The last linking opportunity in this series taps into one of the largest sites on the Internet.

Craigslist

Craigslist was founded in 1995 by Craig Newmark and serves billions of unique visitors each month. So, how can you use this to your benefit?

Classified ads can be very lucrative when used correctly. Since Craigslist is free, this is a great place to start with absolutely no risk.

Your presence within this massive site will increase your exposure and link popularity. Many of the ads also appear in Google and Yahoo. This is especially true for those who optimize their ad properly.

I would highly suggest that you incorporate CraigsList into your overall business plan. You can begin placing your own ads at CraigsList.

Now that you know about many of these untapped linking techniques, I urge you to begin your own campaign. Just remember, if you’re not distributing quality content, you are simply wasting your time. The first step is to become an authoritative site. After that, you will find that links come quite naturally. In fact, many of them will come without ever asking for them.

Brilliant advice on link building…

July 20, 2006

I rarely run articles from others in this section of the Friday Traffic Report, but this one needs to be read by all of my subscribers and visitors.

Not only is the article below, by Jennifer Laycock, Editor of Search Engine Guide, one of the best WRITTEN articles I have seen in the internet marketing community in a long time, it is also laden with profoundly powerful advice on link building.

How to Win Links and Influence People
By Jennifer Laycock (c) 2006

If the title of this article sounds familiar, don’t be surprised. It’s been more than 70 years since it was originally published, and in that time Dale Carnegie’s mega-best seller How to Win Friends and Influence People has earned a spot on the shelf of some 16 million individuals and spent more than a decade on the New York Times best-seller list. While Carnegie’s book was written as one of the original “self-help” books, I’d propose that the tenets found within can play a valuable role in building successful strategies when it comes to marketing techniques like link building, viral marketing and even online reputation management.

Link Building

While there’s no argument about the value of building quality
links to your web site in order to help increase both traffic and
search engine rankings, there is often some confusion about the
best way to go about doing that link building. Reciprocal or
incoming? Buying links or earning them? Using software to manage
the process or doing it by hand?

What would happen if small business owners started to think about
link building in another way? What if they started to think like
Carnegie and to apply his theories to their link building and
baiting efforts. With that in mind, let’s take a few key points
from Carnegie’s book and see how they might be applied to a link
building campaign.

Tenet #1: Talk in Terms of Other People’s Interests

This is a key point that many people miss when it comes to
building links. Web site owners aren’t going to link to your site
just because you want them to, they’re going to link to your site
because there is something to be gained for them. That may mean
that you’ve made a purchase or a trade in exchange for the link,
or it may mean that you’ve simply offered up content that is of
enough interest to make them want to share it with their readers.

Any time that you contact a site owner on your own to ask about a
link, you need to figure out what you have to offer that will
benefit that site owner. If the most compelling argument you can
come up with is “you linking to me will help me out” then you
likely need to do a little more thinking before sending off that
request.

Tenet #2: Make the Other Person Feel Important

This is basic common sense, but it can be difficult to do without
taking too far. No one likes a brown-noser but everyone likes to
feel special. Even the briefest of compliments about a specific
article or resource available on someone’s site can set the stage
for a polite link request. If you enjoyed a recent blog post
about a topic related to the link that you are requesting, take
the time to say so. Doing this also shows that you’ve spent
enough time on the site to actually KNOW that there’s a good
match. Knowing that someone reads and enjoys their site is a
great way for a site owner to “feel important.”

Tenet #3: Use Names Whenever Possible

This is one of the most simple, yet crucial steps to link
building. Whenever possible, take the time to find out who you
are addressing and then make sure that you use their name.

Here at Search Engine Guide we get an enormous amount of press
releases, article submissions and requests to talk about or
feature a specific product or service. Nearly three-quarters of
these requests come in to a generic address like webmaster@ or
info@. The reality is that it would take a visitor about two
minutes to figure out that the editor of this site is named
Jennifer and that her email address is
jennifer@searchengineguide.com. The requests that come in from
people that can’t be bothered to find that information out
usually get treated with the same level of “respect” and quickly
find their way into the circular file.

Tenet #4: Try Honestly to See Things from the Other Person’s
Point of View

While this point ties in pretty closely with tenet #1, it’s still
one that needs to be considered separately. It’s very easy to
think of link building in terms of what it’s going to do for your
site, but it’s also important to remember that any time you are
asking for someone else’s time and energy, you need to take the
time to see things from their perspective.

Before you send or even begin to craft any type of link request,
picture yourself on the receiving end. What are the chances that
you’re going to jump up and do the dance of joy simply because
someone has asked you to take the time to put a link on your
site? On the other hand, it’s pretty easy to realize that you
might feel differently if someone took the time to politely and
personally contact you to share something that you would be
excited to be able to share with your readers.

Finally, I’ll close this section with a reminder of my own
personal philosophy of link building. We’ll call it…Jen’s
Tenet.

Jen’s Tenet: Link building is really relationship building

Keep in mind that linking is a form of endorsement. One site
linking to another is the same as one individual telling a friend
about a store, service or book that they recently enjoyed. Just
as you wouldn’t run into a cocktail party, throw your business
cards in the air and scream “tell your friends to buy their next
house with XYZ Realtors!” you cannot send out dozens of emails in
a single shot asking anyone and everyone to link to your real
estate web site.

To build good links, you need to build good will. Take the time
to craft relationships via email, blogs and discussion forums.
Ask for links when they are relevant and respect their time and
opinions when you make your request.

It may take a little longer to build good links this way, but
you’ll find yourself racking up better quality links with less
overall work and frustration than you would if you simply relied
on the “email everyone you know” techniques.

In part two, we’ll explore some more of Carnegie’s principles and
the way that they can be applied to a good viral marketing
campaign (http://www.searchengineguide.com/laycock/007985.html).

Top Sites Lists Valuable Advertising or Waste of Time?

July 11, 2006

There is a new buzz going around about Top Sites lists

A new kind of top sites list is out now and people are snatching up “tags” or keywords on them as fast as people bought up Pixel Ads in 2005.

Is this another waste of time or a real benefit for advertisers?

The answer depends on each individual site.

If you are sure that the owner is going to get traffic to the page, a lifetime ad (or two years, whatever the pitch is) would definitely be worth it.

If you see language at the top geared ONLY toward advertisers and not toward regular surfers, probably not.

A lot of people are selling these links like the Pixel Ads with no intention of investing money and resources in advertising the page to real surfers.

The only people that hit those pages are the advertisers themselves.  A total loss for the advertiser.

The good buys will be with high traffic sites that are reputable and trust worthy.  You must be sure that the page will have search engine rankings and a lot of visitors looking for information on various topics.

If not, don’t bother with it.

One reputable site, if I may say so myself, is ours at Content Desk.  It is called the Content Desk Top 500 Content Site tag cloud

It will get a lot of traffic from the network of Content Desk sites and the thousands of visitors we have each day from our article directory.

Just be careful not to go crazy with a bunch of Top Sites without reading between the lines and before you know who yo uare dealing with.

The majority of them are never going to return your investment in targeted traffic and rankings.  Go with people you can trust!
