Darren Rowse on Social Media Marketing

March 16, 2008

testDarren Rowse (ProBlogger.net) has become a convert to social media marketing and branding in recent months. He started by being a regular user of the social sites (which I recommend to everyone I train who is just starting out with social marketing). Then he noticed more and more people coming to his sites from his links on the social sites.

Using social media sites just like everyone else does (the way they were intended to be used by their creators) really pulls in good links and traffic. Thinking selfishly about how you can blast your links all over the place and self-promote without giving anything back to the communities you belong to will get you into trouble and get you zero results.

What I like about Darren’s latest post on the topic is that he’s teaching his readers to do it the right way. Check out his video “4 Social Media Marketing Tips for Bloggers” below.

He definitely has been doing it for awhile. He was in MyBlogLog very early and has several large followings around the social web in different sites. He’s just talking about it more these days.

Great advice. I have been social networking for a while and I will certainly put these ideas to use. I have already been promoting others on my blog at http://www.moonsharvest.blogspot.com

    Thanks a lot

I learn something new every day around here . . . and today’s no different. I found Rowse’s advice a little like listening to Jack — solid, common-sensical, and socially-engaged. That’s not to discount what he said, but it does seem to support what Jack has been teaching all along.

What was entirely new, I noticed Jack’s new plugin toy, “WhoSez” and began using it myself! I don’t have many comments yet, but I’m getting there. In the meantime, I’ll keep an watchful eye out for future FTRs, as these are chock full of USEFUL INFO!

    Great goin’ Jack-O

I liked what he said about maintaining consistency in your profile, how he simplified the idea of marketing to getting your brand out there, and how he points out the value of putting others up and promoting others as the best way to be worthy of others promoting you.

I liked that he talked about maintaining consistancy, well it´s simple really, just interact and be helpful and people will notice you or your brand in time,

Jack - once again you are such a great poster boy for transparency and frank discussion about the industry, and the way forward

Thanks for sharing Darrin’s video - the idea about focusing on promoting other people and seeing that come back is so smart and so right.

    Another fine job - Rick
