I just found the first best plugin for Wordpress of 2008. (I found it in 2008, so it counts!)
I saw it in action today on HowtoSpoter and it is a brilliant idea. The plugin is called CommentLuv and if you scroll down this page to the comment field you’ll notice a new check box and text:
Enable CommentLuv which will try and get your last blog post, please be patient while it finds it for you
You can see it in action here. Scroll down to the comments and you will see regular comments but now you also get the last post that commentator made on their blog. See the comment by “Virginia” at bottom for example.
That is major major reward for participation!
Knowing you are going to get a link to your latest blog post, with all the keyword goodness you built into the title, tends to make you want to visit a site more.
The more people visit and comment on your site the more user generated content loaded with keyword relevance that gets added to your site. That’s a big deal.
I will be following closely on sites like HowToSpoter who are using plugins like this because I simply get more for participating there. With CommentLuv enabled, you get an incredible bonus and people will see traffic increases absolutely, positively from this.
(I still moderate comments and, now that I am giving so much by using this killer Wordpress plugin, will be even more picky as to who gets past me. So don’t think this is your chance to get some easy links without making meaningful posts!)
Download CommentLuv and get more participation going on on your blog! Click the graphic below…

Thanks for mention Jack!
Greatly appreciated and yes, that plugin has increased my comment count quite a bit. People seem to love to have links to their latest posts as a reward for participation.

Thanks for the advice Jack. Just one question, Can you control whether this plugin produces “No Follow” and “Follow” links? Just wondering if that is possible, because I noticed that on the blog of Howtospoter.com the link seems to be “nofollow”.
Regards,
Hector

Looks like it is defaulted to no follow, but in this case I’d agree with spammers knowing this plugin doesn’t allow follow links. That’s the last damn thing we need is them targeting every blog on the web using this plugin, which would be easy to do.
Links are for traffic in this case and I’m happy about that.
Killer Idea.
Jack you are brilliant and so am I because it just so happens I mentioned you in my last blog post.
Oh the Irony of it all.
I will be implementing this soon on my blog as well since this sounds good to motivate reader to post their comments more frequently.

Hector,
Plugin will use whatever defaults specified on your blog for links in comments. I also use a plugin called “Lucia Linky Love” which sets Do Follow on links in comments after a preset number of comments on my blog. There are 3 different settings I set within admin of that plugin:
1. I enable Do Follow from link on the commenter name after 3 comments on my blog
2. Enable Do Follow on any url specified Within the comment itself after 5 comments
3. And Trackbacks get the least juice with 10
That scale allows me to reward commenters by sharing the PR juice and prevent any spam issues.

Jack, you pulled me over her via Twitter of all places. lol
Let’s test out this new plugin and see if it picks up my last post.
High quality comments are hard to come by these days.
This sounds like a great plugin to try for 2000ATE…Regards, Jared Blake

Many thanks.

Guys, as Jack has rightfully pointed out - this plugin sets “do follow” or “nofollow” attributes based on your default settings.
I know many people love to say they Do Follow commenters - I would recommend having a second look into Lucia Linky Love plugin as I have stated above. Or at the very least make sure you know your blog defaults …
Reason I say this - if you Do Follow on all comments - you give 2 links from each comment, even when it might be a questionable.

Hi Jack, I have been using this plug-in since the end of December and it has helped in getting more comments on my blog. Just wondering do you think this plugin is the reason my individual post pages have a higher page rank than my home page? I thought if anyone would know it would be you. Keep up the great work!
Ray Loesch’s last blog post..My Month Long Orgy With Entrecard
You are a product of Power Linking Ray! Your inside pages rank higher than your main page because you work on getting links to them harder than your main page.
Also if your main page is your blog index page, it changes all the time and that changes your keyword density all the time. Google tends to let that page rank in a fluid, dynamic kind of way since it changes so much (every time you post.)
I like CommentLuv also. Great plugin.
Had it on my blog - disabled it - guess I need to enable it. I felt it would be a “spammer magnet.”
I’ll just have to see I guess.

Dude - you have a blog. That’s all spammers need to know! lol CommentLuv shouldn’t increase spam at all (over the amount we already get because we are easy targets) but it will increase the number of sub-par comments which you will need to watch.
I can tell when someone is trying to just get on the blog vs. really participating in the conversation. Those kinds of comments have gone up - but you delete them and they learn that they have to do better than that next time.
Hi Jack,
Funny you should mention this plugin, ‘cos I just found it last week (from memory, I think it was on Alex’s blog) and was intrigued enough about it to bookmark it, with plans to come back and look closer at it this week.
Personally, I like the fact that it encourages commentors to put more thought into what they write in your blog comments section - a reward for good thoughts, if you will
Anyway, I will look at implementing it on my blog and test drive it.
Thanks for the heads-up - as always, some great info from you.
regards

I just installed Comment Luv and am using it to raise money for child sponsorship.
I have been involved in Child sponsorship for over 28 years through World Vision and Missionary Ventures Canada. I have also made about 15 mssion trips to mainly Central American countries. Freely Give is an idea I had recently to raise money to sponsor children in developing countires by getting commissions from major stores, airlines etc. when people buy through our site. At the moment we sponsor 7 kids and hope to add a new one every two weeks !! Why not give it a look

Not that I know of. Sounds like a conflict with another plugin you might be using. Seems like there would be another competitor out there, but then, you can probably get the plugin working with some detective work on why it was screwing with your entire comment system. Google search to the rescue!
I added CommentLuv to my blog a couiple of days ago after finding it on another blog. I haven’t gotten any comments yet since I’ve added it, but I think it’s going to be great!

Luv commentluv! You might want to try keywordluv as well, tends to keep the usernames cleaner.

For a long time I wasn’t even aware of “Commentluv”. In fact I didn’t even know what a “backlink” was, never commentluv or do-follow. Eventually I realized these and I must say that Commentluv is a very handy tool! I have learned from the hard way though . . . I was commenting too much and got too much backlinks all at once for my new site. I learned the hard way unfortunately about what Google’s “sandbox” is.
Commentluv is pretty nifty. What I like about it is the fact that it rewards the visitor for leaving comments. I’ve added this to a couple of my sites, as a way of thanking people for popping in with comments.
Thanks for the heads up. Will download it right now and try it. Seems to be a very useful plugin.

I agree that KeywordLuv increases the traffic because people like the interaction of commenting. We believe the this is indeed a great Keyword Plugin.
Hi
One thing I didn’t understand. In CommentLuv, we need to type “@” in the name. Most of them work but at some blogs like yours, the name comes as a whole. Can you please let me know why that happens?
I have subscribe your blog..
Thanks
Ron
@Ron - I am seeing separate words for other commentators. Space separated words should work for you - depends how you’re typing it in.
Okay, thanks for the information, I will install it in my other blog. Thank you once again.
We’ll be sure to use the keywordluv and commentluv plugins on our blog now. It should increase subscribers and comments. Thanks!
I use CommentLuv on two of my blogs. Had difficulty making it work on the others. The Blogger plug-in seems to work on some templates only.
