5 Levels of Social Media Relationships

April 4, 2008

Here’s a great post on the 5 Levels of Social Media Relationships.

Learn the difference between:

the Jedi
the iBestfriend
the Buddy
the e-quaintance
and the Link-lover

They are all represented in my friend list and they all have their purpose.

This is a great way to look at social relationships online, especially for marketers who sometimes get too hung up on whether that last person they approved as a friend on Facebook is really ever going to be the kind of friend that pushes them out of the way of oncoming traffic.

They aren’t. You are never going to meet them. Recognize them for the friend that they are and get on with your work!

Wow, what a timely entry for me to read. Just this morning I woke up to find my InBox flooded with Digg “friends”. I was ready to pull out my hair… but first I had to follow up with Twitter Tweeples.

I found myself thinking how very sick I am of trying to keep track of friends/ fans/ neighborhoods/ stalkers, etc., and how much I miss being able to spend my online time just blogging rather than managing all of these superficial “relationships”.

Jack, thanks for pointing me to a good read to help keep it all in perspective. I needed that.
