Using Twitter for Marketing on Autopilot

April 13, 2008

Here we go again! John Reese was convinced by Ed Dale that Twitter is a cool tool for marketing. Who wants to guess how fast John gets to 5000+ followers on Twitter this week?

Guess How Long It Will Take You To Get 5000 Followers?

Let’s say a lot longer if you simply Twitter the way everyone else does.

There is a solution though. Readers will remember an incredibly important and powerful presentation Howie Schwartz gave our people a few weeks ago on microblogging. So you already know the tactics for getting traffic from Twitter, Pownce, and Tumblr. Many who were on that call or watched the recorded webinar are reporting serious results.

I watch traffic come in daily from my microblogs and, using Howie’s tools, I really don’t mess with them much. Note that on my Twitter account you see what look like forum posts. They are. They are from Authority Site Center members. Note too that there are links on most of them to various sites of mine.

Big Note: I don’t, of course, do all that by hand. Nor do I go looking for “followers.” All that is done with Howie’s microblogging tools. I do add things when I get the urge, but even my feed for Friday Traffic Report gets syndicated to my Twitter account, so I really don’t have that much to post there manually.

Check out how many followers and how many posts I have there. That’s after 2 weeks and I’ve post a grand total of Twice by hand.

Check also that the information is keyed in and relevant to my microblog market. I am only making friends on Twitter on keywords we have in common. Therefore the followers are targeted as is the info. I’d wager it is far more understandable what my Twitter account is about at a glance than most which are done by hand by regular mortals who use the service.

The key to marketing with multiple microblogs is syndicating your content as much as possible with automation.

What everyone else is talking about is simply HAVING a microblog on Twitter OR Tumblr OR Pownce. We have multiple accounts on all of them. So whatever proclamations you hear this week on the value of the traffic from one manually updated Twitter account, multiply what you hear at least 10x and you’ve got an idea of what what we’re doing with microblogs.

It’s hardcore, but as Howie says, “its war!”

Did you come to fight with your fists or a Sherman Tank?

Blogphobia: The fear of writing, starting, growing a blog…

April 11, 2008

It’s hard to tell a bunch of clients to start blogging when there is a large percentage of people who want a powerful presence on the web; just not by their own “pen.”

It was with great pleasure to stumble upon Chris Brogan’s recent post entitled “Conquering Fear of Blogging.” In it he discusses keeping a “scratch blog” and other important pieces of advice for Blogphobics.

Did you think I was going to tell you how to get out of blogging? Sorry. Not if you really want all the social traffic and search engine rankings you can get for your business. It’s the only way.

Microblogging Webinar Available: Twitter Traffic!

March 28, 2008

Howie Schwartz is at it again.  This time his target is “microblogging.”  We just had a webinar two nights ago with Howie showing attendees how to use microblogs to drive traffic and open new channels on the web for people to find your stuff.

If you’ve ever wondered why someone, especially a marketer looking for traffic, would want to mess with Twitter, then you need to watch as Howie shows you exactly why.

It took a mind like Howie’s to figure out that there is real power in microblogs and microblogging platforms.  Where I saw microblogs as a nuisance and utter waste of time, Howie figured out how to pull incredible clicks out of them and fill them with targeted, relevant content on autopilot.

The QU.IL.LO Method to Creating Killer Blog Content

March 5, 2008

Guest Post by Tom Deeter

tomdeeter.jpgAre you creating valuable content for your blog (or website) on a regular basis?

Or, are you feeding your audience leftovers gathered from other bloggers syndicated “junk food”?

I hope not, because consistent, valuable content (text, audio and video) is the ONE aspect of your web presence that MUST exist.

As a fellow social marketer, I struggle with this too. So, here’s a great “pneumonic device” that helps me keep content creation on track: QU.IL.LO

Questions

Notice the beginning of this post. It started with a question, right? I could have started with: “A good blog creates valuable content on a regular basis.” And you would have said… “Duh!”. But, I bet the question made you think to yourself… “Is my content valuable, am I posting consistently?”

You tell me, which reaction is better?

Illustrations

Now, take a look at line #2 above. Just in case you did not get the point with the initial question, I threw in a brief illustration that may have poked a few article marketers in the ribs.

Imagine… serving up leftover junk food from someone else’s garbage… how disgusting. Sadly, this is what the majority of bloggers do.

So, this illustration made the point in a way that caused the desired emotion (disgust) in just one sentence.

Logic

Once the question is raised and the illustration causes a reaction, the logical statement will have meaning and impact.

See line #3… I now restate the point phrased as a question in line #1. But now, you get it, you believe it and you are more likely to trust what I have to say next.

Social Suicide

As a serious social marketer, you may be busy…

  • Blasting Squidoo with loads of keyword rich lenses.
  • The QU.IL.LO Method to Creating Blog Content
  • Casting articles to dozens of article directories with SubmitYourArticle.com or iSnare.com.
  • Making timely comments on oodles of blogs each day using Comment Kahuna or Comment Sniper.
  • Digging, Sphinning, BuzzUping, or Twitting for hours each day.

All in an effort to lead a browser back to your blog and, more importantly, your offer.

So, at the end of that rope, what do you have waiting for your visitors?

Well, they are either welcomed with great original content that is easy to navigate or smacked with banners, text link ads and recycled content.

The latter is the typical fare on most blogs and this, my fellow social marketers, kills the potential of ever making money with your blog.

Why not reevaluate the quality of your blog and start using the QU.IL.LO method for fantastic blog content that readers will want to be a part of.

Where’s Your Blog’s Unique Voice?

January 26, 2008

We’ve been talking a lot at SPL and ASC lately about finding your voice for your blog. As you might have noticed there is more “me too” blogging going on than “me new” blogging. A lot of people are taking my frequent advice to look at what others are doing successfully so literally that they seem to think I mean to “copy” the successful, unique voice bloggers.

bloggingvoice.jpg

I don’t mean that, of course. Seeing what is working for others is one thing, but a blog that copies the look and feel of an A-List blog as well as the types of content and even the messages and writing style of the original - that’s just cheating and lazy. And completely ineffective.

Finding your voice and making a blog unique is a crucial step on your way to high traffic and lots of links. Until you can set yourself apart from the rest of the “pack” in your niche, people will find it easy to leave without subscribing. They will notice you’ve done about the same content as a favorite blog of theirs already, so why subscribe to yours?

Your “voice” is what makes people decide to subscribe and stick around. If you are too much like the current A-Listers in your niche they won’t have any need to subscribe.

Increase Repeat, High Quality Comments and Visitors

January 25, 2008

I just found the first best plugin for Wordpress of 2008.  (I found it in 2008, so it counts!)

I saw it in action today on HowtoSpoter and it is a brilliant idea.  The plugin is called CommentLuv and if you scroll down this page to the comment field you’ll notice a new check box and text:

Enable CommentLuv which will try and get your last blog post, please be patient while it finds it for you

You can see it in action here.  Scroll down to the comments and you will see regular comments but now you also get the last post that commentator made on their blog.  See the comment by “Virginia” at bottom for example.

That is major major reward for participation!

Knowing you are going to get a link to your latest blog post, with all the keyword goodness you built into the title, tends to make you want to visit a site more.

The more people visit and comment on your site the more user generated content loaded with keyword relevance that gets added to your site.  That’s a big deal.

I will be following closely on sites like HowToSpoter who are using plugins like this because I simply get more for participating there.  With CommentLuv enabled, you get an incredible bonus and people will see traffic increases absolutely, positively from this.

(I still moderate comments and, now that I am giving so much by using this killer Wordpress plugin, will be even more picky as to who gets past me.  So don’t think this is your chance to get some easy links without making meaningful posts!)

Download CommentLuv and get more participation going on on your blog!   Click the graphic below…

Feedburner Subscribers Firefox Add On

January 21, 2008

We just launched a new FireFox Addon that shows you how many RSS subscribers you have to your Feedburner feed and how many hits are generated daily from your feed.

feedburnersubscribers.JPG

It’s simple, but solves a pesky problem: not knowing at a glance what your feed subscriber count is and rarely, unless you log into your Feedburner account, knowing how many hits you generate from your feed daily.

There’s just one small problem. Mozilla puts you in a “sandbox” when you submit new add ons and it has to be reviewed by several people before they let it out in the general population where everyone can download and use it.

I will give you a scoop and show you how to get this killer little add on, but you have to do me a favor and review it at Mozilla to help get it out of the sandbox.

Deal?

Here’s what you need to do:

Go to
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

Register from link at upper right
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/users/register

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/users/login

Search for “feedburner” and you’ll see the Content Desk “Feedburner Subscribers” add on.Get the following result page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6369

The review link is at the bottom, but use the thing first so you know we’re not kidding - it works and all! :)

This is an honor system type of thing. Some will grab it and leave, but I am counting on the general goodness of “the people” and hoping you will take the time to review.

Is Your Blog Mobile Friendly Yet?

January 17, 2008

Get More RSS Subscribers with Feedm8

You could have a ton more RSS subscribers if mobile users could get your content in a friendly format and easily subscribe from your blog.

feedm8.gif

That’s the pitch at Feedm8. And they are absolutely right. The measure of blogs, even more than the little green Google bar, is fast becoming the number of RSS subscribers they have.

Feedm8, a free service for bloggers, gives you the ability to easily attract more subscribers who want to read your stuff on their phones while on the run. Think waiting in airports for one!

Make More Money

Feedm8 also has a revenue sharing program that comes with their free mobile feed service. So if more subscribers doesn’t move you, money should. Reach more readers and make more money doing it. That’s what I call a badass service!

Take your blog mobile and earn more!

Thanks to Tom and Peter over at Web2Center for turning me on to this one!
