Resource lists still rule the day for generating links…
February 24, 2007
Dosh Dosh wrote a great piece on linkbait through resource lists recently.
Here are some of the most linked “bait” posts I have made:
You can start to see a pattern when you check out linkbait posts that work for others.
How can you create a valuable resource list or post for your niche right now that can take off once people in your niche start linking to it?
It happens everyday. Why not make it happen for your site today?

[...] Here are some tips on how to do this effectively. It’s based on a post on Feb 24 2007 on Jack Humphrey’s Friday Traffic Report. [...]
This post is an excellent example of why Jack Humphrey’s claim that his team provides you with the best Wordpress platform doesn’t hold water.
If you have Google Toolbar installed, you’ll notice that this post is NOT cached in Google at all.
That’s because the actual content on this post is dwarfed by all that content displayed in the two sidebars on the right, and Google will see it fit to slap this post (and many, many others on this site) with a duplicate penalty, since most of the other posts display similar characteristics: post content that is dwarfed by the volume of content in the sidebars.
Google isn’t that smart to figure out Wordpress yet.
And that is why I have reformatted some of my blogs so that content in the sidebar is displayed via Javascript.
On the basis of my analysis, I wouldn’t recommend the $97 / month ASC membership.
David,
You are probably wondering why I let your comment through. After all you are talking smack about my product, lol.
It is to show people the extreme lack of understanding of what it is we do at ASC along with an even greater misunderstanding of Wordpress, navigation systems, and what the search engines do when they hit a page.
1. I can get this page back out of supp results. It’s an old post and hasn’t been linked to much.
2. Search engines read content from left to right by nature of what’s presented first in the code. Sidebar navigation on the right side is just that, and the links verify to other pages of original content, so Google is satisfied with that. Nothing on the right is for the sake of keyword loading - it is to get people around the site reading all the content that is provided.
3. If you click on the links above in time, before I update them, you’ll see that they all lead to 404 page not found pages. This post is old enough that it is before I changed my permalink structure and the links are not leading to actual posts. That has more to do with this page not being in Google than anything else.
By the time you or anyone reads this I will have Web 2.0 posted this post, fixed the links, and be well on my way to having this page all over the SERPS.
4. Despite your finding that this post isn’t ranked, I get 5000+ uniques to this site per day and get more Google traffic in a day than most sites get in 6 months. What does that say?
On the flip side, you include a link to your blog and it has no style, no ranking, no PR, a complete lack of history or content and obviously no traffic. Is that what the alternative? I would have posted a link to something that supported your argument if I were you, but I think you are trying out the “guru hater” approach to try to make your name. I’ve been doing this for 10 years friend and my reputation is impeccable for providing quality services, information, and know how about marketing online and getting traffic. You have a long way to go before you can spam a blog and make a name for yourself against our track record which is documented everywhere you go in this market.
5. Back to ASC
You are like a lot of people who judge ASC and what we offer from software alone. From a publishing system alone - as if nothing else we offer has any value to you.
If ASC were only about the actual software we use, what we do to Wordpress to get more traffic than you, and nothing else, it would be worth $600 a month. Hell $1500 a month.
Yet we have coaching (800 freakin hours of small group coaching per year) we build the sites for you, which means a lot to people who know they don’t know everything, as opposed to people who THINK they do, and more training resources than anyone could imagine from site building, SEO, content development, niche research, plugin usage, over 100 training videos on everything to do with internet marketing period…
And that’s not even the 1/2 of it.
You are damn right about one thing. Our system isn’t worth $97 a month. It’s worth $1500+.
In fact, that’s just what our high end customers pay for us to do it all for them. With the traffic they are pulling down, just try telling them it’s not worth every penny and see how fast they laugh you out of the room.
Nice blog by the way…
David… David… David..
Why do people do it to themselves?
YOUR POST is a perfect example of WHY ASC exists, in the first place. For the purposes of ‘educating’ the masses against ‘rhetoric’ such as what you’re exuding through your couple of paragraphs.
You’ve obviously done NO research as to ‘how’ Google’s™ bots read pages AND NO research on how Duplicate Content is recognized by them.
Here, educate yourself…
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html
Ya know the age old adage; “Too many Chef’s in the kitchen”? Well, hopefully after you read information from “the source”; you’ll step out of the kitchen and go back to serving webpages to your best ability and leave the cooking and preparations to those who actually do their research before attempting to feed the mass public.
Just a thought.
Resource lists still rule the day for generating links……
This is an older post of mine, but check out the comments. David Chin got his A** handed to him on a platter, lol….
Hey, hey, hey Jack. I have always admired your style of writing and the content presented with great aplomb. But what I cannot understand is rolling out a tank to squash a fly?
David Chin is talking out of his limited level and that make be the way he values your work and efforts. What you don’t do is engage in meaningless criticism. You have to understand this.
My father used to say, “It’s not every fight you take on because some were designed to wear you out. The decision to engage or not to is entirely your.” I rarely every respond to things like these but you seemed a very genuine guy reading your work. My advice is that you shouldn’t take any offense, because David has only expressed his right of opinion. If this was because of his scoffs at your valuation of $97, it’s not worth the fight.
Personally, I may not have used your services but I am very impressed with your FREE 2007 Authority Black eBook download. Infact it was what brought me here. His comments won’t deter people like me from using your services in the future. People have paid more for less services and will continue to do so. Such comments as nothing but distractions. For me I’m learning my way on the internet.
I don’t usually respond to arguments on the web, but I have to disagree with you Benny …
People do take notice of comments about people’s products online, particularly when you’re talking about a monthly payment of $97 … People are usually looking to justify the payment and our cynacism makes us look for the negative.
The other point I would make is that David Chin is teaching Internet Marketing on his site - even if only by way of reviews. For that reason, Jack has a right to protect people who may well listen and take heed to David’s comments.
My experience is that people all to often fail online because they look for the cheap and cheerful rather than paying for what works and a comment like the one David made WILL lead some to believe he’s an authority and follow him.
Just my thoughts …

The Blogging Queen’s last blog post..Blog Vs. Website?
Hmmm….
An older post, but a goodie nonetheless.
I’m with The Blogging Queen on this one. I’m glad Jack ‘rolled out the tanks’ so to speak to address what David brought up. While David has every right to criticize (’everyone’s entitled to their own stupid opinion’), Jack has a reputation to protect.
Sure, Jack Humphrey is the guru of gurus. I know that. You know that. But if this were the only site I’d landed on and read David’s comments, I’d probably go looking elsewhere.
In my opinion, you’ve got to counter every argument and overcome every objection, particularly when they’re unfounded and baseless that David’s.
Keep the good work coming, Jack!

Hey Jack,
Was just reading the ABB 2008 and it lead me here. Quite unsurprisingly, Mr. Chin’s blog still has no PR, even a year later.
I agree with Max Lowe. I’ve rather enjoyed flaming people who knock my products. If they have a legit gripe, so be it. It’s just those ignorant, wannabe authority bloggers that incite the beast within.
Get’em Jack.
Hey Jack
found this page from your awesomem BlackBook. Chin’s site is dead.
New readers…do yourself a favor and subscribe to Jack’s blog and services. His expertise has been very helpful to me in my fledgling on line business.
