How to attract a decent following on Google+

English: Google+ wordmark

A client just asked me about getting started on Google+.  Specifically, how to start attracting a decent following.

Below is the email I wrote back to him.  (With a little editing for your pleasure.)

Glad you asked!  There are tons of posts and guides on cultivating a meaningful presence on G+.

Here’s one of my favorites

Other tactics I use are:

Commenting FIRST on super popular plussers’ updates.  They have a megaton of followers, and many of them will be reading the post you just commented on first or very early in the discussion.

I’ve often been first or early to comment on different G+ “celebrities” stuff.  Just watch your stream and wait – one of them will post and you can formulate a great, snarky, interesting, or otherwise engaging comment before anyone else does.

“But I don’t have a “stream” to follow.  It’s dead on my + screen!”

Follow a lot of leaders: in the market you’re going after, follow (circle) the leaders.  Organize them into different circles, interact with them frequently on their stuff, send them stuff to check out (send just to them instead of a whole circle) and use it to keep up on what’s hot.

Get leaders to mention you:  once this happens, hold on to your seat, you will get a ton of followers.  Hopefully the person who mentioned you has a following that is perfected attuned to your stuff.

How to get them to mention you?

  • Do something cool and right up their alley.
  • Be relevant to them or a discussion they’ve been having with their crowd lately.
  • Be a regular.
  • Show up often – all over the place.  Hang out where they hang out OUTSIDE of G+.
  • Show them you’re a considerable cut above their regular followers with your dedication to your craft, your content, your trade, or your cool shares.  They’ll end up mentioning you or sharing a circle with you in it.
